South West Canterbury Integrated Learning - The Ruru Informational Report

WALT write a information report about a resource found in the Canterbury area that is of significance to the Maori.

The Ruru (Morepork/Koukou)

The Ruru is a small chocolate brown owl, with yellow beady eyes and a narrow hooked beak. They can be found in New Zealand and Tasmania. Ruru are commonly found in forests throughout mainland New Zealand and on offshore islands. The Ruru is New Zealand’s only surviving native owl. It is known for its haunting and shrill call.

What do they eat?
Ruru are nocturnal, hunting at night for large invertebrates including beetles, weta, moths and spiders. They will also prey upon mammals such as small birds, rats and mice. The Ruru also catch roosting birds unaware as they sleep at night!

Was the Ruru helpful in any way to the Maori?
In Māori tradition the Ruru was seen as a watchful guardian. It belonged to the spirit world as it is a bird of the night. Ruru are considered to be wise and represent protection or a warning.

Ruru’s eggs are what colour?
Ruru breed in spring and summer. Nests are usually placed within cavities of live or dead trees, within broken logs, in a tree fork or within a hole in an earth bank. The chicks fledge when they are about 7 weeks old. Their egg colour is an off white cream colour.

What are Ruru prey for?
Some threats to the Ruru are cats, possums, rats and mustelids. However when nesting on the ground eggs and chicks may also be harmed by pigs and hedgehogs.

How big do Ruru grow?
The females are bigger than the males. Head to tail they measure around 29 cm and the average weight is about 175 g.

Why are Ruru’s eyes yellow?
Large bright yellow shining eyes designed for ideal binocular vision in low intensity light. The Ruru can’t see when there is no light at all, they still need some light to see.
Overall the Ruru was very important to the Maori as it acted as a  guardian, it lives and breeds in forests and has white specks all over its body.

Empathise:
Share at least 3 example of how you have shown empathy recently.
1. When Caitlyn got her twin block plates she struggled to talk properly, I had to show empathy and repeat what she said to people so they could understand what she was trying say.
2. When Stace and Yanita thought they won the block they were unfortunately wrong and it turned out that the boys, Andy and Nate won, I felt so sorry for them.
3. I felt sorry for Caitlyn when others were calling her names and I defended her and said it wasn’t nice and that they should stop it.

Communicate:
Share at least 3 examples of how you have communicated in different ways this term.
1. Talking to others.
2. Video chatting my friends regularly.

3. Actions and facial expressions.

Art Attack

My Goal: Create artist inspired artwork.

What did I learn to do: First I looked at what colours went well with each other, second I choose my favourite combinations. I then created a draft copy of my chosen design and then did another copy of it but this time in chalk. The reason we did it in chalk is because later on in our good copy we would put dye on our design and the chalk soaks up the dye and leaves the places were the chalk was black. I started my good copy in chalk then coloured it in and went over the whole thing with black dye.

What is my next step: Try to incorporate different patterns that I have never done before instead of doing the ones that I always use in art.

Music

WALT: To compose and create a rap (with beat if possible) about bullying.

How did you go about achieving this? By collaborating with Zara to put together rhyming words and then making them into verses and checking if it went with our beat.

What resources were used to help you?
HTML5 – we used this website to help us create a beat for our rap. We used each others ideas to put the rap together.

Did you go through the process on your own or collaborate with other people?
I collaborated with other people.

How did you find the process? Pretty easy because we came up with ideas very fast.

What did you enjoy most about the process of creating a rap? Working with my friends and using the website because I have never used it before.

What might be your next step? My next step is to share it with some other people.

My rap
Boys at my school
call me a fool.

Everyday
they make me pay

for their lunch
and their brunch
please please go away.

I tell them that it isn't right
but then they make me join the fight.

They hurt me till my bruising shows
and tell me that I run so slow.

I cry and cry as they walk by
I try not to get in their way
but then they start to say,

"We're gonna push you in the pool
because we rule this school.

We'll bite and skite
until you start a fight."

But of course I know bullying isn't right.

Multiplication/division Term 2/3

WALT: Solve multiplication problems involving decimals by estimating first, then checking.

I have done this strategy by estimating the equation by rounding the number up so now the equation is 8x6 instead of 7.8x6. Then you work out the equation like a normal algorithm but you know that the answer will be near the answer that you estimated first.

My next step is to turn improper fractions into mixed numbers by using division.

IALT: To continue to strive to stay above standard.

IALT: To continue to be an active class member and leader.

Work hard and stay on task.

Always contribute to class discussions if I have a answer.

Put my hand up for leadership roles.
I have been on task and have finished my SML most weeks. I always try my hardest and I ask for help when I need it.

I am in kapa haka and I am constantly on the green traffic light. I always help out around the Hub.
Continue to do the same things.

Go to the library and ask for some advice from Mrs Ward.
I have been reading lots of different books for the 40 book challenge.

I have used the wall display that Mrs Ward has put up with different books on it.
Make sure I have read at least one book in each area. I know I have Science Fiction texts to read.

Measurement T2

WALT: Find the perimeters/areas of common shapes, and limits of answer.

To find the perimeter of a shape I add all the measurements (length and width) together and make sure I add the unit of measurement to the number.

To find the area of a shape I multiply the length of the shape by the height of the shape e.g. length x height. I make sure I add the unit of measurement to the number.

Example: A rectangle is 6 cm by 9 cm
Perimeter - 6 cm + 6 cm + 9 cm + 9 cm = 30 cm
Area - 6 cm x 9 cm =54 cm squared

The Ride

WALT write ‘a moment in time’ piece of writing.

                                 The Ride
My heart was racing as I got on the scariest ride at the park. As I sat in my torn seat I sunk in with a thump.

I looked over the edge and I saw my family, they were a long way down watching me nervously. I saw other kids getting on the ride, I was nervous for them.

I heard the girl next to me screaming as the ride started to move. As I moved around I heard my seat creak. I heard the engine start and I thought, oh no.

I felt the wind push with all its might across my face. Then a cold shiver ran down my spine. I felt my face turn from a nice pinky colour to a pale white. I was going to vomit for sure.

I heard wind swirling and birds singing, relief ran through my body when the ride stopped.

The Problem With Plastic.

W.A.L.T   Use reference books/tools.

I have learned how to do a bibliography correctly.

My next step is to get the bibliography correct the first time.

What is the problem with plastic?
The problem with plastic is that it does not easily degrade. It may break down, but only into smaller pieces. The smaller those pieces get, the more places they can go.
What is plastic?
A type of material with synthetic in it. It can be made into just about any shape because it can be molded.

Why is it a problem for the environment?
Because most of the plastic is going into the ocean and hurting or killing an animal or it is making the environment look like a rubbish bin.

What facts can you find about the amount of plastic we use, how it is made, how it breaks down?
  • 50 percent of the plastic we use we throw it away after one use.
  • Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times.
  • 46 percent of plastics float
  • Plastic in the ocean breaks down into such small segments that pieces of plastic from a one litre bottle could end up on every mile of beach throughout the world.
What can you do to help?
Stop littering. People aren't going to stop making plastics but that's alright because all we need to do is think about what we are doing to the animals and the environment and things will be good. Buy in bulk it is usually cheaper and causes less rubbish. Take your own bags to the supermarket rather than using their bags.

Create a glossary of at least 5 technical words used in your research.

  • Terephthalate - a type of acid
  • Oceanographer - someone who studies the ocean and marine life.
  • Polypropylene - a synthetic resin used in fabric and molded objects
  • Microbeads - an extremely small piece of plastic, used in cleansing products as exfoliating agents.
  • Zooplankton - plankton consisting of small animals.
Create a bibliography of resources you have used to present your answers to this question.

Coming Up

WALT: identify writing processes that are appropriate for that purpose.

I woke up to a rooster. I live on a farm and I think it was trying to tell me to get up. I had had a horrible sleep, it was so windy last night. But when I looked outside it had surprisingly cleared up.

I was on my way to another farm. I was delivering them a lot of hay. I had to take the long route through the forest to get there because there was road works. When I looked at my very old watch I realized two things. One, I needed a new watch and two, I’d better hurry up if I wanted to get there in time.

As I was trying not to go over the speed limit I went across what looked like a very old bridge. As I looked down I saw a lot and I mean a lot of kids playing in the river. Then suddenly CRACK I was falling and falling and falling until SPLASH I hit the water in such shock. I didn’t know what was happening. It felt like I was sinking down and suddenly I stopped sinking and everything went black.

                                                       Half an hour later

When I opened my eyes I was lying on the rocks near the water. Someone was standing looking over me like I was some weirdo. I didn’t know where I was or what I was doing there. As time went by I was able to stand up I asked a few questions and thanked David, Jake and the guy who gave me mouth to mouth.

David and Jake told me what had happened. I was driving along the bridge and my truck fell through and I sunk to the bottom of the river. They worked together to pull me out of my truck and  save me and a guy gave me mouth to mouth.

I rang the farmer that I was supposed to be delivering hay to and told him what had happened. He forgave me and then the next day we were back in business and the road works were gone so I didn’t have to go through the forest again.
